Grading & driveway grading

Fix the slope, and most of the other problems go away — ruts, puddles, water at the foundation, a drive that washes out. Serving Milford and Southeast Michigan.

Grading & driveway grading
Sound like your property?
  • "My drive turns to ruts every spring."
  • "Water sits against the garage after every rain."
  • "The yard was never finished after the build."
  • "I need a level spot for a barn."
What D1 does

Grading, in plain terms.

Grading is shaping the ground so water goes where you want it and the surface holds up under use. It's not glamorous, and it's the reason the driveway, patio, or barn lasts.

  • Driveway regrading & crowning

Cut the high spots, fill the low ones, restore a crown so water runs off instead of down the middle.

  • Rough & finish grade

Around new construction, additions, or after a demo — so the yard is actually done.

  • Positive drainage away from structures

Reshape the grade so water leaves the foundation, garage, or barn.

  • Level areas for pads & outbuildings

Cut and fill to a level, compacted area ready for a pole barn, garage, or shed.

  • Backfill & compaction

Bring in and compact fill in lifts, not in one dump.

  • Drainage

Drain tile and French drains for the water problems regrading alone won't fix — quoted after we see where the water goes.

How a grading job runs
  1. Free on-site estimate

We look at where water goes now and where it should go. Written number on the spot or within a day.

  2. Planned & scheduled

Ground conditions matter for grading. We'll give you a date and tell you if rain moves it.

  3. Build

Most residential grading is a one- to two-day job. You'll see the equipment on site when we said.

  4. Walk-through & cleanup

We check the slope together. Then we clean up.

Built for Michigan ground

Why grade fails here.

Clay holds water and heaves when it freezes. A grade that's "close enough" in August is a puddle by April. That's why we build a real crown into drives and pitch the grade away from anything with a foundation — and why we won't grade on saturated ground and call it done.

Questions about grading
How much does grading cost?

It depends on the area, how much material has to move, and access. We give you a written number after walking the property — no charge for the visit.

Will you tear up my lawn?

Some, where the equipment travels. We tell you where before we start and clean up after.

Can you fix standing water?

If it's a grade problem, yes. If it needs drain tile or a French drain, we do that too — and we'll tell you which it is at the estimate instead of selling you grading that won't fix it.

Do you do the gravel too?

Yes. Regrade and top-up are usually one visit.
