Patios

A patio that's still level in five years starts with the base. We build the base right and lay pavers or stone on top of it. Milford and Southeast Michigan.

Patios
Sound like your property?
  • "The backyard is grass and nothing else."
  • "The old patio has settled and holds water."
  • "I want somewhere to actually sit outside."
  • "We need a landing off the back door."
What D1 does

Patios, in plain terms.

The visible part of a patio is the last two inches. The part that decides whether it stays flat is the excavation, base, and compaction under it — which is the part we care about most.

Excavated, based, compacted, laid, and edged.

  • Base prep & drainage

Pitched away from the house so water leaves.

  • Steps, borders & seating walls

Added where they make the space work.

  • Repair & re-level

Settled sections lifted, base fixed, pavers reset.

Built for Michigan ground

The base decides.

Pavers don't fail; bases do. Compacted stone base at the right depth, pitched away from the house, is what keeps a Michigan patio flat through freeze-thaw. Skipping depth to save a day is how a patio ends up holding water by year three.

Questions about patios
Pavers or stone?

Pavers are consistent and easier to repair; natural stone looks the part on a rural property. Both go on the same base.

How long does a patio take?

Most residential patios are under a week of on-site work. Base and cure time can add days; we'll tell you up front.

Can you add a firepit?

Yes — patio and firepit together is common.
