A firepit is a small masonry project sitting on the ground, which means the ground decides how it ages. We excavate, set a base, and build on it so the pit stays level.

Frost heave doesn't care that it's a firepit.
A pit set straight on the ground tilts by spring. A short compacted base under it is the difference — and it also keeps water from sitting in the pit and spalling the stone.
Do I need a permit or setback?
Many townships have rules on distance from structures and lot lines. We'll check what applies to your address.
Can it go on the existing patio?
Usually. If the base under that spot is weak, we'll say so and fix it first.
